Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery mainly offers the comprehensive treatment of cleft lip and palate and treats approximately 80-90 patients every year. In Osaka prefecture, around 120-130 newborns are presumably affected by these conditions in a year. With 30-year experience leading the medical services in this field, our department is now one of the largest facilities in the region.
We take a team approach to treat patients with cleft lip and palate from birth to adulthood. Specialists, who have extensive experience in cleft surgery (Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons), in orthodontic treatment (Orthodontists), or in speech therapy (Speech pathologists), closely group together and provide the most appropriate comprehensive treatment for the patients.
We also work cooperatively with clinicians in our hospital with various specialties, such as obstetrics, neonatology, medical genetics and otorhinolaryngology.
Cares and treatments we are providing include:

  • All kind of surgery for patients with facial cleft, including primary lip plasty, velopharyngeal plasty, and orthognathic surgeries
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Speech therapy
  • Primary care for newborns with facial cleft (with doctors at the department of Neonatology), including treatments for feeding problems and presurgical orthodontics.
  • Prenatal counseling (after prenatal diagnosis of facial cleft was made by obstetricians)
  • Genetic counseling (at the department of Medical Genetics)
  • Treatments for otitis media (at the department of Otorhinolaryngology)
